I haven't written a book, but I'm lucky enough to know some talented people who have.
I am, however, what might be called an "avid" reader. My family sometimes calls me a fanatical reader.
So I enjoyed this discussion about book editing (which I do have some experience doing) and the optimal length for various kinds of books.

What did you think about the title? Hard to move past that one--
ReplyDeleteWhich, Fobbit? Interesting!
ReplyDelete"Does Size Matter?"
ReplyDeleteInteresting article. She makes some good points. I hadn't put my finger on why some books are fine at length and some aren't. She mentioned Emma Donoghue’s “Room,” which, though the writing was fine, I put down after 25 unbearable pages. Yet longer books (like her George R.R. Martin example), with expansive worlds, a variety of characters, etc., have "room" for the reader's mind.
Yes I thought her analysis was really interesting.
ReplyDeleteI agree, there's only so much one can take of a certain dark snark, you know?
